Gold and silver are often discussed together, but their price drivers are not entirely the same. For those involved in precious metals trading, understanding this difference is more important than memorizing a specific price level.
The pricing logic of gold: from real interest rates to credit hedging
In traditional analytical frameworks, there is a relatively stable inverse relationship between gold prices and real interest rates. When US real yields decline and the dollar weakens, gold prices tend to find support. The logic behind this mechanism is that gold itself does not generate interest, and the opportunity cost of holding gold is measured by the real interest rate; the lower the interest rate, the more attractive it is to hold gold.
However, this framework has shown noteworthy deviations in recent years. Since 2024, gold prices have repeatedly reached new highs, yet this has occurred while real interest rates have been relatively high. Some analysts believe that the forces driving gold pricing are shifting from purely interest rate factors to a more diversified approach, including the revaluation of the US dollar's credit and continued central bank gold purchases. Data from the World Gold Council shows that global gold ETFs saw record net inflows in the third quarter of 2025, while central bank gold reserves in many countries continued to increase during the same period. This means that when observing gold price movements, focusing solely on interest rate indicators may not be sufficient; changes in the monetary and credit landscape also deserve to be considered.
Silver's Dual Identity: The Intersection of Industrial and Financial Attributes
Silver and gold are adjacent on the periodic table, but their roles in the market differ significantly. Silver carries both financial and industrial attributes, and the proportion of industrial demand has been steadily increasing in recent years.
Silver is the most conductive metal, a physical property that makes it an irreplaceable raw material in photovoltaic cells, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence hardware. In 2025, silver consumption in the photovoltaic sector accounted for approximately 40% of China's industrial demand and 26% of total demand. The photovoltaic industry's annual silver demand has exceeded 5,000 tons, representing about one-sixth of global annual silver production. When silver prices rise rapidly, photovoltaic companies face cost pressures and begin seeking technological pathways to reduce silver consumption. This feedback mechanism means that industrial demand for silver is not rigid and constant; price itself can, in turn, influence the demand structure.
Therefore, when observing silver, in addition to the financial attributes shared with gold, it is also necessary to pay attention to photovoltaic installations, new energy policies, and the progress of alternative technologies. Changes in the gold-silver ratio often reflect the ebb and flow between these two driving forces.
Several mechanisms to understand in precious metals CFD trading
Many precious metals traders participate in the market through contracts for difference (CFDs) rather than directly holding physical gold and silver. The logic behind this approach is that traders sign contracts with the platform to settle accounts based on the price difference between opening and closing positions in the underlying asset, without involving physical delivery.
Transaction costs are not just about spreads. The complete cost structure of precious metal CFDs typically includes three parts: spreads, commissions, and overnight interest. The spread is the difference between the buy and sell prices. Under normal market conditions, gold spreads are usually between $0.1 and $0.5, but can widen significantly during major events such as the release of non-farm payroll data. Overnight interest is the fee incurred or received when holding a position overnight; essentially, it's the interest rate difference between the two currencies involved in the position. Most platforms charge three times the overnight interest on Wednesdays to cover weekend costs. For traders with a medium- to long-term holding habit, including overnight interest in cost calculations is more comprehensive than just looking at the spread.
Leverage is a tool, not a strategy. Leverage allows traders to control larger notional positions with less margin, but even small price reversals can amplify the impact on account equity. A common practice is to keep the risk of each trade within a small percentage of total capital and to use stop-loss orders to pre-determine exit rules, reducing emotional interference in on-the-spot decisions. The choice of leverage level should match one's holding period and risk tolerance, rather than simply pursuing a higher notional position.
Differences in liquidity during trading hours are worth noting. The precious metals market is most liquid when London and New York trading hours overlap, often resulting in narrower spreads; liquidity is relatively lower during Asian trading hours, leading to different price volatility characteristics. Different platforms have their own rules regarding weekend positions. For example, ACE Markets has a mandatory liquidation margin requirement of 30% or less during regular trading hours, but adjusts it to 200% or less on weekends, significantly higher than regular trading days. London gold and silver trade until 04:55 AM on Saturday during daylight saving time and until 05:55 AM during standard time, closing at the weekend close. For traders planning to hold positions across the weekend, checking their account's margin and position status before Friday's close is standard practice to avoid unexpectedly triggering the platform's processing rules.
Why is information transparency worth paying attention to?
In precious metals trading, traders rely on platforms not only for whether their orders can be executed, but also for whether the costs behind those executions are clearly visible. If information such as spreads, overnight interest, margin requirements, and liquidation rules are presented clearly in the account interface, traders can incorporate cost factors into their strategy development, rather than discovering in post-trade reviews that fees have eroded expected returns.
ACE Markets' precious metals trading platform integrates with synchronized international market data streams, covering major commodities such as London Gold and international silver. The trading terminal supports multiple order types, allowing traders to adjust risk control parameters such as stop-loss and take-profit orders before and after opening positions. The platform supports exporting complete trading reports, and the account interface displays information such as net value, margin, available funds, and floating profit and loss, facilitating post-trade review. Regarding cost execution, the platform offers three account types: GOLD, EMERALD, and PLATINUM, with minimum trade sizes of 0.01 lots and maximum of 10 lots for London Gold and London Silver. Whether these configurations suit one's trading pace and cost structure requires individual assessment by the trader.
The volatility in the precious metals market stems from multiple sources. Understanding the respective price logics of gold and silver, and grasping the practical implications of cost, leverage, and timeframe rules in CFD trading, is more fundamental than short-term price prediction. The value of a trading platform lies in its ability to provide clear and actionable tools to support these understandings, rather than replacing the trader's own judgment.
