To participate in the trading of precious metals such as gold and silver, one must first understand the market's operating principles. Precious metals possess both financial and commodity attributes, and their prices are influenced by multiple macroeconomic and microeconomic factors. This article outlines their volatility characteristics, core variables, and common trading tools to help traders rationally choose trading instruments based on their understanding of the market.
I. Fluctuation Characteristics and Cyclical Patterns
The international precious metals market operates 24 hours a day, with trading taking turns between the Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America time zones from Sunday night to Friday night, allowing prices to reflect global data and breaking events in real time.
Liquidity varies significantly across different time periods: The Asian session (morning to afternoon Beijing time) sees fewer participants and relatively mild volatility, making it suitable for observing intraday trends; the European session (afternoon to evening) sees increased activity after the London market takes over; the Americas session (evening to early morning of the following day) sees deep participation from the New York market and is often the most volatile period of the day, with gold and silver potentially experiencing short-term, significant unidirectional fluctuations when important US data is released. Traders should choose their time window based on their interest rates and risk appetite.
Volatility can be broadly categorized into two types: event-driven volatility, which is often triggered by geopolitical conflicts, unexpected interest rate adjustments by central banks, or significant deviations from expected data. This type of volatility is characterized by its rapid onset and large magnitude, but its short duration. Trend-driven volatility, on the other hand, is driven by macroeconomic cycles, such as rising inflation expectations or a depreciation cycle of the US dollar. This type of volatility is characterized by its longer duration and provides room for trend tracking.
II. Core Variables Affecting Prices
First, there's the real interest rate and holding cost. Gold doesn't generate interest. When the real interest rate (nominal interest rate minus inflation rate) is low, the opportunity cost of holding gold decreases, and gold prices are easily supported. When the real interest rate rises, funds may flow to interest-bearing assets. Pay attention to US Treasury yields, especially TIPS yields.
Secondly, the US Dollar Index. Gold is priced in US dollars, and the strength of the dollar is generally negatively correlated with gold prices. When the dollar weakens, gold is relatively cheaper in non-US regions, which may stimulate demand. The DXY can be used as a supplementary reference, but the correlation is not absolute; both may rise together when risk aversion is extremely strong.
Thirdly, there's the issue of inflation expectations and the demand for hedging. Precious metals are often seen as a hedge against inflation, but it's crucial to distinguish between "expected inflation" and "changes in real interest rates." If inflation rises while the central bank significantly raises interest rates, real interest rates may rise instead of falling, suppressing gold prices. A comprehensive assessment of nominal interest rates, inflation expectations, and real interest rates is necessary.
Fourthly, there is industrial demand. Silver, platinum, and palladium have significant industrial attributes: silver is widely used in electronics, photovoltaics, and welding; platinum and palladium are mainly used in automotive exhaust catalytic converters. When analyzing silver, in addition to its financial attributes, attention should also be paid to the supply and demand fundamentals such as the prosperity of the manufacturing industry and the new energy industry.
III. Order Types and Risk Management
Market orders execute immediately at the best available price, suitable for periods of ample liquidity and low volatility; slippage may occur before and after important data releases due to sudden liquidity shortages. Limit orders set a target price and are executed only when reached, helping to facilitate planned entry and exit, but do not guarantee execution. Stop-loss orders preset the maximum acceptable loss price and automatically close the position when triggered, a core tool for controlling individual trade risk. Take-profit orders automatically close the position and lock in profits when the target is reached. A well-balanced order portfolio allows for planned position management when constant monitoring is not possible, reducing emotional decision-making.
IV. Functions of the ACE Markets Platform
ACE Markets, a one-stop comprehensive financial trading platform, offers gold and silver traders a diverse range of precious metals, facilitating cross-asset analysis and asset allocation within the same account. Its copy trading function automatically tracks the actions of other traders, providing a window for observing and learning different risk management and position-holding strategies. However, copy trading is not risk-free; past performance is not indicative of future results, and users should make decisions based on their own judgment. The platform is committed to providing a smooth trading execution experience, reducing uncertainty caused by system latency during periods of rapid volatility, and offers 24/7 customer service support.
V. Continuous Learning and Risk Warning
Precious metals trading requires continuous learning: establish a knowledge framework ranging from macroeconomic indicators and monetary policy to technical analysis; keep a trading log to review the basis for decisions and emotional biases; familiarize yourself with the process and verify strategies using a demo account before investing real money; and view profits and losses rationally, treating each trade as part of a long-term process.
Forex and CFD trading carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Leverage amplifies both gains and losses. Ensure you fully understand the risks involved, trade only with funds you can afford to lose, seek independent advice if necessary, and read and understand the relevant risk disclosure documents.
