Gold and silver traders often treat these two commodities within the same analytical framework: viewing the same US dollar index chart, using the same set of technical indicators, and setting similar stop-loss distances. However, if you've ever traded both in live trading, you might have a vague feeling that the same position size and the same entry signal might perform well in gold but repeatedly trigger stop-losses in silver. This difference doesn't stem from directional judgment, but from the structural differences in contract size, liquidity depth, and volatility patterns between the two commodities. This article, from the perspective of the characteristics of these commodities, combined with ACE Markets' basic configurations for precious metals products, outlines several things traders should clarify before setting parameters.
The order-of-magnitude difference behind the standard hand
Most traders know that a "lot" of gold and silver is different, but they may not be aware of how significant the difference is. In industry practice, one standard lot of gold corresponds to 100 ounces, while one standard lot of silver corresponds to 5,000 ounces. Roughly calculated at a gold price of $2,000 per ounce and a silver price of $25 per ounce, the nominal value of one lot of gold is approximately $200,000, and one lot of silver is approximately $125,000. While the orders of magnitude seem close, the key difference lies in the profit or loss corresponding to each unit of price change.
A $1 fluctuation in gold prices translates to approximately $100 in profit or loss per lot of gold; a $0.1 fluctuation in silver prices translates to approximately $500 in profit or loss per lot of silver. While silver's intraday volatility appears mild when measured in cents, it can translate to substantial profit or loss per lot. This means that if a trader habitually uses the same stop-loss distance for gold (e.g., $5) for their silver position, the corresponding loss per lot of silver could be in the $2,500 range—far exceeding the stop-loss amount for the same number of gold lots.
ACE Markets' precious metals trading supports order sizes as small as 0.01 lots. This granularity is more significant for silver than for gold: 0.01 lots of silver corresponds to 50 ounces, and a $0.1 fluctuation in the silver price corresponds to approximately $5 in profit or loss. For traders who want to use silver for swing trading but do not want to bear the volatility of a full contract, micro-positions provide room for adjustment. In contrast, 0.01 lots of gold corresponds to 1 ounce, requiring relatively less fine-grained parameter adjustments.
Liquidity depth and probability of "stop-loss"
The average daily trading volume in the gold market is much higher than that in the silver market. This fact is not obvious on calm trading days, but it manifests itself in a different way near key price levels: silver has a thinner price depth, and prices may break through certain levels more quickly, with a higher probability of stop-loss orders being triggered and a relatively higher slippage.
The early Asian session presents a typical scenario. At this time, major liquidity players from London and New York haven't fully entered the market, and the bid-ask spread for silver may widen more significantly than for gold. If traders follow the usual practice for gold, setting stop-loss orders a few cents below key support levels, the probability of silver's "false breakout" triggering stop-loss orders and then quickly rebounding is not low. This isn't a platform execution issue, but rather a direct reflection of the liquidity characteristics of the commodity at the order level.
ACE Markets employs an execution-only model, where client orders are directly linked to the market, and the platform does not act as a counterparty. In silver trading, this means that the execution price reflects the available quotes in the upstream liquidity pool at that moment, not a price set by the platform itself. Understanding this helps traders distinguish between "insufficient market depth" and "platform execution anomalies" when reviewing slippage—the former is a characteristic of the instrument, while the latter relates to platform selection.
The direction of overnight interest rates is asymmetrical.
The cost structure for holding gold and silver overnight is asymmetrical on most platforms. Long and short positions have different fees or payment standards, and the differences between the two instruments may exceed traders' expectations. For swing traders planning to hold positions for several days, this cost accumulates daily, typically involving multi-day interest calculations on Wednesdays.
A practical approach is to check the platform's current overnight interest rate disclosure before opening a position, deduct the interest cost for the expected holding period from the target profit, and then see if the remaining profit margin is still worthwhile. ACE Markets discloses its overnight interest arrangements for precious metals in its product information, which traders can view directly in the contract specifications interface on MT5. This action takes only a few minutes but is more valuable for decision-making than reviewing the statements afterward.
Gold and silver share the label of "precious metals," but their differences in contract specifications, liquidity characteristics, and volatility mean that the same set of parameters can result in drastically different performances on the two instruments. The platform provides a unified trading channel; however, traders must adapt the parameters themselves.
