Gold and silver traders often focus heavily on directional predictions, neglecting two dimensions that directly impact account equity: the actual coverage of trading sessions and the real cost of holding positions overnight. These two factors, while not related to market prediction, subtly alter profit and loss figures daily. This article examines the time rules and cost structure of precious metals trading, and, using ACE Markets' configuration methods in relevant areas, outlines the functional details traders should pay attention to when choosing a platform.
The Time Boundaries of Precious Metals Trading: More Worthy of Attention Than You Think
The gold and forex markets are known for operating almost 24 hours a day, but "continuous" does not equate to "unlimited." Taking ACE Markets' XAU/USD trading hours as an example, the quote session begins in the early hours of New Zealand time, but the actual tradable period is slightly shorter—gold only opens for trading a few minutes after the quote session begins and closes a few minutes before it ends. This means that traders accustomed to placing or closing orders at specific times need to incorporate these few minutes of difference into their trading rhythm.
More noteworthy is the arrangement before and after the weekend. According to ACE Markets rules, London gold and silver trade continuously until nearly 5:00 AM on Saturday during daylight saving time, and one hour later during standard time. For traders holding weekend positions, Friday night's market fluctuations are still counted in the normal trading cycle, rather than being in a state of "the market has closed and there's no time to react." Conversely, Monday's opening time also involves the switch between daylight saving time and standard time. Users who are used to trading immediately after the market opens may miss their predetermined entry opportunities if they ignore this hour difference.
These details themselves are not complicated, but they all have one thing in common: whether the platform clearly and proactively presents these rules to users. When evaluating a platform, precious metal traders should not only look at spreads and leverage, but also spend a few minutes browsing the trading hours page to confirm whether their frequently used trading periods are fully covered.
Overnight interest rates: a hidden variable for medium- to long-term holdings
Short-term traders often don't pay much attention to overnight interest, but for traders who hold gold or silver positions for more than one day, this fee accumulates daily and becomes an indispensable part of the strategy's profit and loss.
Overnight interest is essentially the interest rate differential between the currencies involved in the position, represented by swap points in precious metal CFDs. The cost structure of going long on gold and going short on silver can be completely different, and most platforms charge triple interest on Wednesdays to cover the holding costs over the weekend. For swing traders, if the expected holding period for their strategy is five to ten trading days, the accumulated overnight interest can easily wipe out a significant portion of the profits from price fluctuations.
ACE Markets has a clear overnight interest disclosure mechanism for its precious metals products, with different fees or payment standards corresponding to different positions. Traders should include this cost in their profit and loss calculations before building medium- to long-term positions, rather than waiting until the bill comes out to realize its existence. A practical habit is to open two virtual positions (long and short) simultaneously in a demo account, hold them for several days, and then compare the changes in the account balance to intuitively understand the actual impact of overnight interest on net worth.
The suitability of micro-positions for precious metals trading
The price volatility of gold and silver can be considerable on a normal trading day. For traders with limited capital or who wish to finely control their risk exposure, the ability to establish positions in smaller units is a practical need. ACE Markets supports micro-position trading in precious metals, with a minimum trading unit of 0.01 lots. The significance of this configuration is not about "leveraging small amounts for large gains ," but rather about allowing traders to match their risk budgets with more precise position sizing. For example, when a trader wants to control the risk of a single gold trade to within 1% of their account equity, micro-positions provide the possibility of adjusting granularity, rather than being forced to choose between "one lot is too heavy, zero lots are not advisable."
Limitations of stop-loss: A fact that needs to be understood in advance
Precious metals may experience gaps or sudden, sharp fluctuations during major data releases or unexpected events. In this context, the actual execution price of stop-loss orders may deviate from the preset price. ACE Markets explicitly states in its disclosures that stop-loss orders do not guarantee a price. This is not unique to any particular platform, but rather a common reality in CFD trading. Understanding this is crucial: traders should not view stop-loss orders as an absolute "safety net," but rather build multiple layers of risk buffers through position control and leverage management. Relying solely on stop-loss orders for risk management may prove ineffective in extreme market conditions.
The value of simulated environments: exchanging time for knowledge
For precious metals traders who haven't yet traded live on ACE Markets, demo accounts provide a familiar environment without financial losses. But the value of demo trading goes beyond just "practice": traders can specifically test often-overlooked aspects—such as observing changes in spreads before and after non-farm payroll data releases, or checking the actual amount of overnight interest deducted after holding positions for several days. These observations are far more helpful than any promotional material in determining whether the platform's features match their trading habits.
The costs and rules of precious metals trading are set in stone; the difference lies in whether traders are willing to understand them before investing real money. The platform's functional design determines how this information is presented to users, while user choices determine whether this information is actually used.
