accomplish in a few hours what other assets take weeks to achieve. For traders active in the London gold and silver markets, the real factors influencing long-term results are rarely the entry timing of a single trade, but rather whether the cost structure is clearly understood, the tools are adequate, and risk management is effectively implemented. This article starts with the fundamentals of precious metals trading, using the platform features of ACE Markets as an example, and outlines several dimensions that traders can consider when evaluating the trading environment.
First, understand the cost: the spread is just the starting point, not the whole story.
Many traders new to precious metal CFDs focus on the spread, but the full cost of holding a position typically consists of three parts.
The spread is the difference between the buying and selling price, and it is incurred upon opening a position. Under normal market conditions, the spread for gold offered by major brokers is generally between $0.1 and $0.5. When London and New York sessions overlap, liquidity is abundant, and spreads tend to narrow, but they can widen significantly around the time of the non-farm payroll data release. Commissions depend on the account model: some platforms use a "zero commission + wide spread" approach, while others follow a "low spread + fixed commission" route. When comparing costs, both factors need to be considered together. Overnight interest is the fee or income generated from holding positions overnight. Essentially, it is the interest rate difference between the currencies involved in the position. Most platforms charge three times the overnight interest on Wednesdays to cover weekend costs.
One noteworthy aspect of ACE Markets' cost presentation is its approach: the platform offers three account types—GOLD, EMERALD, and PLATINUM. The trading panel displays estimated swap and commission details before opening a position, and daily spreads and swap fees are published during the holding period. This upfront cost presentation is more valuable than simply comparing the "lowest spread" for medium- to long-term strategies requiring holding positions for several days or even weeks. Their ECN accounts can see gold spreads fluctuate between $0.1 and $0.8 during periods of high liquidity, subject to real-time terminal quotes. It's important to understand that widening spreads in fast-moving markets directly compress short-term profit margins; traders should distinguish between "average spreads" and "event-driven spreads."
II. Gold and silver have different pricing logics and different tool requirements.
While both gold and silver are precious metals, their driving factors do not entirely overlap. Gold's medium- to long-term pricing is anchored to real interest rates and safe-haven demand: when real yields on US Treasury bonds rise, the opportunity cost of holding non-interest-bearing assets increases, often putting downward pressure on gold prices; conversely, when geopolitical risks escalate, safe-haven buying may temporarily dominate prices. Silver, on the other hand, is also influenced by industrial demand, causing its response to certain macroeconomic scenarios to diverge from that of gold.
This means that precious metals traders need more than just a chart to place orders. Day traders focus on entry structures on the 5-minute and 15-minute charts, swing traders rely on the 1-hour and 4-hour charts to determine direction, and leveraged traders look at daily and weekly charts. ACE Markets uses MT5 as its core terminal, supporting simultaneous display of multiple timeframes, loading of custom indicators, and template saving. Account data is interconnected across PC, web, and mobile devices. In terms of product coverage, the platform offers XAU/USD (London Gold) and XAG/USD (London Silver) under the CFD framework, and extends to platinum, palladium, and other categories. The same account can switch between precious metals, forex, and indices, providing operational convenience for observing the "gold-silver ratio" or cross-product hedging.
III. Execution Efficiency and Risk Control: Two Easily Underestimated Variables
Spreads and commissions are explicit costs, while execution efficiency is a hidden but equally real cost. The delay between order placement and execution in a fast-moving market can cause the execution price to deviate from the planned price; slippage is directly related to the liquidity provider network and order execution model. ACE Markets uses STP (Straight Through Processing) to connect to liquidity, supporting minimum positions of 0.01 lots for gold. This provides finer-grained operational flexibility for traders who adhere to the discipline of "no more than 1%–2% of net asset value per trade" when building positions in batches.
Regarding the order system, the MT5 terminal covers market orders, limit orders, stop-loss and take-profit orders, and trailing stop-loss orders. Position management supports partial closing and batch modification. At the account level, it provides margin occupancy alerts and forced liquidation line prompts. The official website discloses a negative balance protection framework for retail accounts. In terms of leverage, the platform's maximum leverage ratio can reach 1:500, but high leverage will amplify both positive and negative price fluctuations. Actual usable leverage should be matched to the holding period and drawdown tolerance, rather than simply pursuing a high numerical value.
There are some easily overlooked time points in precious metals trading. ACE Markets' London Gold and London Silver trading sessions continue until 04:55 on Saturday during Daylight Saving Time and until 05:55 on Saturday during Standard Time; different margin requirements apply to regular trading hours and weekends, with the liquidation threshold tightening significantly on weekends. Trades planning to hold orders until Monday need to assess the impact of this rule change on margin requirements in advance.
Fourth, beyond functionality, there is an unavoidable prerequisite issue.
The above discussion concerns "what functions the platform can provide." However, for any trading environment involving fund custody, the completeness of the feature list cannot replace independent verification of regulatory status. Publicly available information regarding ACE Markets' regulatory affiliation is controversial and requires traders to verify independently: some sources claim it holds a New Zealand FMA license or AOFA offshore registration, while third-party regulatory inquiry platforms have questioned the validity of its licenses and recorded user feedback regarding withdrawals and slippage. These inconsistencies highlight the fundamental importance of a trader's fund security: whether the license is valid and in effect, whether client funds are properly segregated, and whether the withdrawal process has verifiable records.
Therefore, this overview of ACE Markets' features should be understood as a "tool-level observation," rather than an endorsement of the platform's compliance or fund security. Before opening a live account, it is recommended to independently check the official registration database of regulatory agencies to confirm whether the license number, licensed entity, and business scope are consistent with the platform's claims. Furthermore, use small-amount deposit and withdrawal processes as a practical test of operational efficiency, rather than relying solely on cost data displayed on the interface.
Conclusion
The barrier to entry in precious metals trading has never been about "understanding candlestick charts," but rather about accurately calculating costs, using the right tools, and prioritizing risk control over strategy . MT5's charting capabilities, multi-account cost structures, and the flexibility of starting with micro-accounts are all tools traders can utilize; however, all these variables depend on an independently verified trading environment with transparent rules and verifiable fund flows. For traders active in the gold and silver markets, functionality is the "technique," while regulation and fund security are the "foundation"—establish the foundation before execution.
