Gold and silver traders typically focus heavily on directional predictions: the direction of real interest rates, the strength of the US dollar, geopolitical risks, and the gold-silver ratio. However, what truly leaves a mark on the account curve is not the correctness of a single prediction, but rather the timeframes across which positions are held and whether the platform's rules at those points are pre-calculated. Spreads and commissions occur instantly upon opening a position and are easily visible; however, the daily accumulation of overnight interest, the switching of margin requirements over weekends, and the "rule vacuum" during market closures that prevent position adjustments are a more subtle set of variables in precious metals trading that require deeper understanding. This article takes a time-based approach, using the relevant features of ACE Markets as a reference, to analyze several easily underestimated aspects of precious metals position management.
I. Overnight Interest: How to Calculate the "Time Cost" of Holding Positions. Precious metal CFDs have no expiration date, but holding positions overnight will generate overnight interest (Swap), which is essentially a mapping of the interest rate differences of the currencies involved in the position onto the account. For XAU/USD, the swap points for long and short positions are usually asymmetrical: in an environment with high US dollar interest rates, holding long gold positions often requires paying interest, while short positions may earn interest income, depending on the platform's pricing and the liquidity provider's quotation structure.
Here's a detail traders often overlook: most platforms charge triple the overnight interest on Wednesdays to cover the accumulated funding costs during the two-day weekend closure. This means that a trade that appears to be "held for only three nights" actually incurs the cost of five interest-bearing days if it spans Wednesday. For precious metals strategies with holding periods of several days or weeks, the cumulative effect of overnight interest needs to be factored into profit and loss calculations before opening a position, rather than realizing its existence only when reviewing the month-end statements.
ACE Markets presents costs by allowing traders to view the current long/short swap rates and contract specifications on the trading panel before opening a position. Related costs during the holding period are reflected in the account daily. The value of this information lies not in its "lower" price, but in its predictability—traders can factor known swap costs into their position budget before establishing medium- to long-term positions, rather than treating them as variables known only after the fact.
II. Weekends are not simply extended trading days. The precious metals market operates five days a week. London gold and silver continue until 04:55 AM on Saturday during daylight saving time and until 05:55 AM on Saturday during standard time. While Friday night remains within the normal trading cycle, once the market closes for the weekend, traders lose the opportunity to adjust their positions during the trading day. Account status is "frozen" during the market closure; any macroeconomic events or price gaps occurring over the weekend can only be addressed passively after the next trading session begins.
For this reason, some platforms implement different account processing standards on weekends compared to regular trading hours. For example, according to ACE Markets' disclosed rules: during regular trading hours, the forced liquidation standard is a margin ratio of 30% or less, while on weekends, a margin ratio of 200% or less triggers corresponding processing. Here, 200% refers to the account's margin ratio, not price fluctuations or loss percentage; it means that the account safety cushion requirement is significantly higher on weekends than during weekday trading. For traders who habitually hold multiple open positions or pending orders on Fridays, what's worth paying attention to near the weekend is not the unrealized profit or loss of individual orders, but rather the overall net worth of the MT5 account, used margin and margin ratio, and whether there are still any untriggered pending orders remaining in the market.
The existence of this rule does not necessarily mean "no positions can be held over the weekend," but it requires traders to conduct a proactive account review before Friday's close: whether partial closing is necessary to reduce pre-payment, whether pending orders far from the current price need to be cancelled, and whether the margin buffer for the remaining positions is sufficient to cover potential gaps at Monday's opening. Treating the weekend as a separate "rule scenario," rather than a natural continuation of a regular trading day, is a concrete and actionable step in precious metals risk management.
III. The Significance of Automated Tools During "Non-Monitoring Hours" Price fluctuations in precious metals don't always occur while traders are in front of their screens. Central bank gold purchase announcements during the Asian session, the London fixing price during the European session, the COMEX active trading window during the American session, and macroeconomic events accumulated over the weekend can all drive prices during times when traders cannot respond in real time. This is why MT5's automation and multi-device collaboration features are highly valued in precious metals scenarios.
ACE Markets uses MT5 as its core terminal, supporting the deployment and backtesting of Expert Advisors (EAs). Position and chart views are shared across desktop, web, and mobile devices. The value of an EA lies not in replacing judgment, but in mechanically executing proven rules during periods when constant monitoring is impossible: for example, automatically entering a trade when breakout conditions are met during the London session, or reducing positions when the account's pre-deposit ratio reaches a preset threshold. For traders who need to balance work and cannot constantly monitor the market, this ability to "leave rules at your fingertips" is more practical than simply increasing the number of indicators.
Meanwhile, MT5 supports closing all or part of positions, a basic yet practical operation for position adjustments before the weekend. Traders don't have to make a binary choice between "holding all" and "closing all," but can instead differentiate their position sizes based on their own risk budget.
Fourth, the convenience of switching between different commodities corresponds to the divergence in the driving logic of gold and silver. Although gold and silver share the attributes of precious metals, their pricing drivers do not completely overlap. Gold's medium- to long-term anchor leans more towards real interest rates and safe-haven allocation, while silver is combined with industrial demand and higher volatility. The gold-silver ratio (the price of one ounce of gold divided by the price of one ounce of silver) has historically fluctuated roughly between 50 and 80, and may break through this range in extreme cases. This means that the same trader may need to manage directional positions in gold and relative pricing or volatility strategies for silver simultaneously.
ACE Markets offers XAU/USD and XAG/USD within its CFD framework, extending to categories such as platinum and palladium. A single account can switch between precious metals, forex, and indices without needing to separately transfer funds or switch back-end systems for cross-product trading. While this account structure itself doesn't constitute a trading advantage, it reduces operational friction between "observation and execution": when the gold-silver ratio reaches the trader's pre-defined observation range, the price quotes and order placement for both products are completed within the same terminal, minimizing delays caused by switching tools.
In precious metals trading, directional judgment determines the direction of profit and loss, while time rules determine the boundaries of profit and loss. The overnight interest calculation schedule, changes in weekend margin requirements, the reality of not being able to intervene in positions during market closures, and the execution functions that automated tools can perform during off-peak hours—these variables don't directly tell traders "whether to go long or short," but they determine the cost and risk structure of the same judgment at different points in time. Understanding these rules, rather than simply comparing the length of feature lists, is closer to the actual needs of precious metals position management.
