When reviewing their accounts over the weekend, many people do the same thing: open their trading software's history and scroll back from the most recent trade. On the third page, they often pause, realizing that the trades they thought "judged the direction correctly" didn't actually look good in terms of profit or loss; while a few trades they'd long forgotten actually boosted the account's profit curve.
The problem usually lies not in memory, but in the way we review our decisions. The object of review is never the market situation, but our own decisions; and the only trace left by those decisions is the line of transaction records on the platform.
First, memory can lie, but transaction records won't.
The moment a trade ends, memory begins to reorganize it. Details like buying in two minutes before the data release or paying a few extra pips in spread won't stay in the mindset of "I was right."
Silver amplifies this bias. Its volatility is usually greater than gold's, and in the same market conditions, there are more instances of adding to positions on the fly and hastily moving stop-loss orders. Profits are attributed to judgment, and losses are blamed on market conditions; this narrative is followed without any real experience gained.
The platform-generated transaction records do not participate in this narrative. It only records the time, instrument, direction, volume, transaction price, and fees—no commentary. Therefore, the starting point for reviewing the trades is not looking at charts, but exporting the raw data and adding two columns that the system will not record: one column records the decision-making process, including the entry reason, planned stop-loss, planned target, and whether the trade was trend-driven, range-bound, or event-driven; the other column records the environment, including whether the order was placed close to a data release, whether the spread was at a normal level, and whether it was during the Asian session or the overlapping European/American session.
After adding these two columns, a single record becomes a statistically valid sample. Similarly, for losses where "the reason is valid but the result is unfavorable" and "the reason itself is invalid," the adjustments needed are completely opposite: the former requires accepting probability, while the latter requires changing the rules.
II. Four numbers to turn feelings into evidence
Once you have a sample of twenty or thirty, you can calculate four numbers: win rate, profit/loss ratio, expected value, and cost ratio. The first two are fundamental, while the latter two determine whether the account can survive in the long term.
Expected value = Win rate × Average profit - (1 - Win rate) × Average loss. A 40% win rate with a 2:1 profit/loss ratio results in a positive expected value; a 70% win rate with only a 0.3:1 profit/loss ratio will actually lead to a long-term loss. Looking only at the win rate often leads to the opposite conclusion.
Cost breakdown = (spread + overnight interest + commission) ÷ gross profit/loss. The cost of intraday trading is almost entirely in the spread, while overnight trading requires factoring in interest. The longer the holding period, the heavier this cost becomes. Many people think they are fighting against the market, but they are actually fighting against costs.
Only by putting these four numbers together can we answer a specific question: Does this account rely on high win rates for small profits, or on a few large trades? The answers differ, and the adjustments needed in the next phase will be completely different. Don't rush to conclusions with too small a sample size; statistical noise is significant within twenty trades. Only a complete record of at least one month is valuable for reference.
III. From Numbers to Rules
Overall figures only indicate whether the overall situation is good or bad; to pinpoint the specific areas where things are not going well, the data needs to be broken down. Breaking it down by commodity—gold and silver are calculated separately because their volatility and cost structures differ, and combining them can mask each other's effects; breaking it down by time period—the same method often performs very differently during the Asian afternoon session and the overlapping European and American sessions; breaking it down by holding duration—intraday and overnight interest costs are on different scales. If losses are concentrated in a particular type of trading, the problem is most likely with the rules, not the indicator parameters.
The next steps can be very small: spend half an hour each week exporting last week's transactions, filling in the two columns, calculating four numbers, comparing them with the previous three weeks, and only modifying one rule. For example, "Do not open new positions 15 minutes before the data release," write this as a pre-position checklist, and verify it the following week. Modify only one rule at a time because modifying three rules simultaneously makes it unclear which one is effective.
This process doesn't actually require sophisticated tools; the ability to export and retain data is sufficient. ACE Markets is a New Zealand derivatives issuer regulated by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) of New Zealand (FSP number 703051). It offers CFDs on forex, gold (XAU/USD), silver (XAG/USD), indices, and energy through MetaTrader 5. Account history retains trade time, price, lot size, and fees, and reports can be exported for self-analysis. Historical trade positions can also be viewed on charts. The same account is used for both desktop and mobile devices, so switching devices won't disrupt the record. These features simply keep the data readily available; they don't improve win rates or constitute trading advice.
Conclusion
The essence of reviewing past performance is to transform the raw data on the platform into your own experience. Market conditions are determined by macro factors, supply and demand, and sentiment, which no one can change; however, the completeness of the records and the honesty of the statistics are things you can decide for yourself.
